| Every season Brian McClair is tipped to be dropped from the United squad but every season the former Celtic utility man proves them all wrong to appear again. A Midfielder or forward, McClair began at Motherwell, joining Utd from Celtic for 850,000 in July 1987, after being Celtic's leading score in all his four seasons there. He ended his career in Scotland being named as the Scottish Player of the Year. Airdrie born McClair is a Scottish international and although not rated for his goalscoring prowess in 1988 became first United player since George Best to score 20 League goals in a season and even grabbed one in the 1994 FA Cup Final victory over Chelsea. McClair left university for life as a professional footballer but failed to make the grade with his first club Aston Villa. | |
