The FA Carling Premiership 1994
Manchester United, Champions
The season 1993-94 for Manchester United will be remembered for
two reasons, it was the season United did the 'double' and it was the season that Sir Matt Busby passed
away. Winning the double was perhaps a fitting tribute to the great man who built the tradition and
reputation that is today's Manchester United.
United started the season where they left off with the previous one. They played arrogant, cavalier football
that was brilliant to watch, and were not only scoring goals, but scoring brilliant goals. United's team had
come of age, and with Cantona now fully settled in, and with the addition of Roy Keane from Nottingham
Forest they seemed unstopable.
United were storming away at the top of the Premiership, at one time they were sixteen points clear of
their nearest rivals. The bookmakers were offering odds on how many points clear United would be at the
end of the season.
By February the season looked over as United did not look like faltering, but by March, with Blackburn
Rovers quietly winning games and drawing closer to United, United had their finger on the self-distruct
button.
In two games in four days, United lost four points, and Eric Cantona was sent off twice. First in the
game against Swindon, for a stamping offence, and then at Highbury for two bookable offences. For the
next few games United struggled, and lost to their rivals Blackburn. At the end of April, however, United
found their form again, and won the league comfortably.
United scored eighty goals in the league, with Cantona, Hughes, Giggs, Sharpe and Keane getting the
lions share of them. Eric Cantona was named P.F.A. Player of the Year, and Alex Ferguson was named
F.A. Carling Manager of the Year.
United's trophy collection that season were the F.A. Cup, The F.A. Carling Premiership Trophy, the
Charity Shield, the Pontin's League Trophy and the Lancashire F.A. Youth Cup. United were also runners
up in the Coca-Cola Cup and the F.A. Youth Cup.
Not a bad season for the Reds!
