The FA Cup Final 1977
Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United
Wembley, 21st May 1977
When United met League Champions Liverpool in the 1977 Final it
seemed a daunting match, however, favourites and predictability
were cast aside as United went on to stop Liverpool from completing
a League and Cup double, just as United themselves had been denied
20 years earlier.
The 50th minute saw Stuart Pearson demonstrating why he was
considered to be one of the games great opportunists when he
took a pass from Jimmy Greenhoff and put the ball over the line.
Two minutes later Liverpool fans were cheering when the equaliser
was scored by Jimmy Case after turning on the edge of the penalty
area and hitting a cross from Joey Jones into the left hand corner
of the net.
Three minutes later the goal which won United the game was
scored by Lou Macari after Jimmy Greenhoff acted upon a mistake
made by Tommy Smith.
Liverpool fought hard to equalize with United, but the Cup was
already well on its way to Manchester.
