The FA Cup Final Replay 1983
Brighton & Hove Albion 0-4 Manchester United
Wembley, 26th May 1983
This was the second time these two teams had faced each other at
Wembley, the first time being 5 days earlier when United should have
won after coming back from a goal down to lead the Seagulls 2-1.
Unfortunately, Brighton managed to draw level.
Brighton skipper Foster returned to his sides defence after being
suspended for the first match, however, Brighton lacked the
determination to win the Cup (for the first time in their history)
that they had in the first match.
After two goals in four minutes during the first half it was
obvious that United were the better side. The opening goal being
scored by Robson with the aid of Albiston and Davies. Davies was
also involved in the second goal after he touched on a corner taken
by Muhren setting up Whiteside to put the ball over the line. This
goal by Whiteside made him the first player to score in both the
FA Cup and Milk Cup Finals in the same season.
The minutes before half time saw the second goal from Robson and also
the biggest lead in an FA Cup Final since 1900 when Bury led
Southampton 4-0. United equalled this record with the fourth goal
being netted by Muhren from the penalty spot. It was the biggest
lead ever held at a Wembley FA Cup Final and it all happened on
Sir Matt Busby's 74th Birthday.
