The former Crystal Palace striker suffered from a lack of goals in the 1994-95 season which culminated in Palace's relegation - but in Cup competitions he was red hot. Spurs signed him to replace Jurgen Klinsmann in June 1995 for 4.5m and alarmingly the goal drought continued when he failed to score in his first six games for Spurs. But manager Gerry Francis did not lose faith in him and was rewarded by five goals in eight matches. Newcastle-born Armstrong, 24, started his career with Wrexham, then had spell with Millwall before 1m move to Palace in Sept 1992. He was Palace's top scorer for three successive seasons after joining the club as a replacement for Ian Wright. Armstrong, an England B international, was banned from football for a month in January 1995 after failing a drugs test.
