The Stranraer-born defender moved from Swindon, then in the Carling Premiership, for 1.25m in July 1993, having captained them to First Division play-off final win (4-3 v Leicester) at Wembley. His career started in bizarre circumstances at Mansfield Town where less than two months after his 17th birthday he was drafted into the team but his registration papers - he had been with a Scottish junior team - had not reached the FA in time and Mansfield were deducted two League points for fielding an unregistered player. He joined Swindon, then in the Fourth Division, in 1985 and made over 300 League appearances for the club as they climbed to the Premiership. A natural leader, he was Swindon's captain at the age of 20, Calderwood has also won full international caps with Scotland and has made morre than 500 League appearances.
