| | The Guildford-born midfielder has become one of the main planks in the Tottenham side constructed by Gerry Francis. Howells is a utility player who can patrol midfield, move up to attack or take on a man-to-man marking job. He joined Spurs via a Youth Training Scheme. Six months later and he had a professional contract although it was to be another year before the 28-year-old made his debut. His patience, however, was rewarded when he scored in the 2-1 win at Shefield Wednesday on February 22, 1986. Howells went on to play in Tottenham's FA Cup winning side of 1991 but prior to the arrival of Francis at White Hart Lane found himself discarded every time the side's formation was changed. He has also been hit by a number of foot injuries but has come through them to become a crucial cog in the Tottenham machine. | |
