John Scales became Tottenham's second major signing in a week after snubbing his first club Leeds to move back to the capital.
Scales had apparently agreed terms with Bill Fotherby, the Leeds Chairman, but made a u-turn when Tottenham came on the scene. Scales said, "It was the hardest decision of my life. Leaving the title favourites to go anywhere is a big, big decision, and when you're faced with having to choose between Leeds and Spurs that's very hard, but in the end it came down to football, that was the main consideration - no, it was the only consideration. I feel very happy and positive about about the prospect of joining Gerry Francis." John Scales moved to Anfield from Wimbledon in September 1994 when Roy Evans agreed to pay £3.5m for the England international. Injury blighted the start of the 1995-96 season for Scales, who missed the first six weeks of season with a hernia problem. Harrogate-born Scales was released by his first club Leeds and then joined Bristol Rovers before moving to Wimbledon where he won FA Cup winners' medal as a substitute against Liverpool in 1988. Scales is a budding rugby outside-half and a decathlete. He was also the North Yorkshire high jump champion and only began playing football in his final year at school.
He played the majority of last season as one of Liverpool's three central defenders, and was the only Liverpool player to come out of the FA Cup Final with any praise. |
