The F.A. Cup Final 1982 (and replay)
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Queens Park Rangers
Wembley, 22nd May 1982
Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Queens Park Rangers
Wembley, 27th May 1982
Spurs, the F.A. Cup holders, had
already played in a Wembley Final this year, in the Milk Cup against
Liverpool, and lost it by three goals to one. So, they were determined
not to lose their grip on the F.A. Cup.
Because of the conflict between Britain and Argentina in the South
Atlantic, Ossie Ardilles was forced to sit out the Final.
The 1982 Final was a dull affair. The game drifted into extra-time,
because Spurs could not find a way past Peter Hucker in the Rangers net.
Spurs went ahead in the eleventh minute of extra-time, a twenty-yard
Glenn Hoddle shot taking a slight deflection of Tony Currie deceiving
Hucker.
Spurs thought they had done enough, but four minutes from the final
whistle, Rangers stunned everybody by equalising. Bob Hazell flicked on
a Simon Stainrod long throw for Terry Fenwick to score.
A replay was the last thing Spurs needed, the players had suffered a very
tiring season, and it was an effort for them to play one last game.
The game was settled as early as the seventh minute. Graham Roberts made
a surging run and was felled by Tony Currie in the Rangers penalty area.
Glenn Hoddle calmly slotted the ball past Hucker to score what turned
out to be the winning goal. Rangers pressed hard for the rest of the
match, but could not find a way past Clemence. Tottenham had retained the
Cup.
