John David Sports Ltd., trading as JD Sports, was founded in 1981 as a partnership between John Wardle and David Makin. Initially the Company traded from one conventional shop in Bury, Lancashire, England, selling sports equipment, clothing and footwear.

During the keep fit boom of the 1980's a niche developed in the marketplace for what has become known as branded sports and leisurewear. The Directors of The Company realised this niche at a very early stage and decided to focus on the branded sports and leisurewear market. From here the Company rapidly expanded to its current base of over seventy five retail outlets with a large geographic spread across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and is now the market leader in its field.

The Company continued its aggressive expansion programme following their highly successful Stock Market floatation on the 22nd October 1996.
